Medical Transcriptionist

A Medical Transcriptionist is a medical language specialist who interprets and transcribes dictation by physicians and other healthcare professionals regarding patient assessment, work-up, therapeutic procedures, clinical course, diagnosis, prognosis, etc., in order to document patient care and facilitate delivery of healthcare services.

MTs need a practical knowledge of medical language, anatomy, physiology, disease processes, pharmacology, laboratory medicine, and the internal organization of medical reports. They must also have an above-average knowledge of English grammar and punctuation, as well as advanced computer skills, time management and organizational skills, all while maintaining a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail. 

Requirements

In addition to the above requirements, you must have a minimum of three years' experience as a working medical transcriptionist in the United States.  The three years of experience required does not include time spent in an educational environment (i.e., must be "on-the-job" experience).   Other healthcare positions, i.e., medical secretary, R.N., M.D., etc., cannot be applied towards the three-year transcriptionist work requirement. Experience that also does not apply towards the three-year minimum requirement would be positions held as a court reporter, administrative assistant, or MTs that transcribe worker's compensation reports for the insurance industry.
